Introducing Lucinda Corrigan Chair of Farmers for Climate Action

Looking forward to the next Rotary Climate and peace forum on 10th November www.climateandpeace.com.au

We are very pleased to announce 3 fantastic new speakers for this event; Greg Mullins AO AFSM, Lucinda Corrigan and Simon McKeon AO.

Lucinda realised that climate change was an issue when noticing changes in the land, the crops and observing bio-changes such as weather and new pathogens coming through.  The Farmers for Climate Action was formed in 2016 as others also raised their observations and concerns. Whilst the climate change debate has been hotly contested in the farming community, the new generation of farmers in particular are recognising the need for change.

Farmers for Climate Action was funded through pro bono work to promote the issues and provide support through their Regional Horizons program which includes.

  1. The development and delivery of the National Climate Change and Agriculture Work Plan. All state and federal Agriculture Ministers have already agreed to approve a national policy.
  2. A new Land and Environment Investment Fund, working from the successful Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC), to support innovation, attract large-scale investment, reward ecosystem services, and promote climate solutions and resilience on the land.
  3. A Regional Resilience Hub Network, to strengthen and diversify existing learning networks, encourage innovation, and empower regional communities with choices in a changing climate.
  4. A Regional Energy Transition Program for farmers.

Significantly they have been successful in moving the National Farmers Federation to a Net-zero emissions by 2050 position. And hope to have the red meat industry at net zero by 2030.

Moving forward Farmers for Climate Action are working closely with the CSIRO and the ANU to advance the Ag-Tech sector including digital technology and data and move this into the market for application in the paddock. Importantly their focus is urging research bodies to collaborate on ways to get products to market with “Climate Smart Solutions”. To support this objective, they created a scientific panel to provide advice on evidence-based solutions.
