We are privileged to have Michael E Mann joining our next Climate and Peace panel in February. Michael is Professor of Atmospheric Science and Director of the Earth System Science Center at Penn State University. He has pioneered techniques to find patterns in past climate change over 1,000 years, and was one of eight lead authors of the “Observed Climate Variability and change” chapter of the IPCC report, which led to the IPCC being jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize with Al Gore in 2007.
With the predicted impacts of climate change around the world now playing out in more wildfires, heatwaves, droughts and super storms Michael has observed that the fossil fuel industry has changed its tactics from that of denial, to deflection, division and despair mongering. He has seen the necessity to challenge this campaign of disinformation from those he calls the “Inactivists” through a new book called the “The New Climate War.” In the book he stresses there is still time to combat global warming if we act decisively. He sees that with the widespread youth movement highlighting the ethical obligations to the next generation, the increasing calls for climate justice, and the incoming Biden administration’s mandate to lead on climate policy, the forces for action are now aligned.
