In February this year, the Climate and Peace Forum attendees heard Maxine Burkett speak passionately about the need for climate reparations, Maxine posed the question , “will adaptation be peaceful or involve conflict?” 

Maxine a Professor of Law at the William S. Richardson School of Law, University of Hawaii, and a Global Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, is an international expert on the law and policy of climate change and cofounder of the Institute for Climate and Peace. 

Maxine and has been appointed as a Senior Advisor with the Office of the Special Presidential Envoy for Climate (SPEC) for the Biden Administration,  working with former Secretary of State John Kerry, who now serves as the Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, she will be advising on international climate change issues and negotiations.

We congratulate Maxine and look forward to hearing of her work as she represents the Biden Administration at the COP26

Prof. Burkett notes, “It is time to treat the climate crisis like the emergency it is and I’m proud to be joining an administration that is restoring our international standing on climate issues and being crystal clear that equity must be part of all climate solutions”.
